If you’re looking for a way to lose weight quickly, uncover the energy you know is hidden somewhere in the depths of your soul, improve your digestion, sleep better and improve your skin, a juice fast may be the way to go…

So…What is a Detox Juice Fast?

When the body is fueled with pure fresh fruit and vegetable juices and nothing else, all of the nutrient requirements are met. Your juice is all that you need.  Juice Fast is alkalizing, anti-inflammatory and highly detoxifying.  It’s not just what you are consuming but what you are leaving out that makes it so good. You are not taking solid, cooked, processed foods, tea/coffee etc. This then lets your body to maximize its ability to get rid of toxins through the liver and colon. Our body organs are constantly detoxifying our bodies; this process is slow and typically unable to keep up with the rate at which we accumulate and the environment we live in. Taking a break from food and giving your body the dense uptake of nutrients and antioxidants that pure juices offer, allows us to detoxify, renew and replenish, effectively resetting our physiological clock. You feel light, energized, alert, clear, revitalized, renewed and restored.

Juice detox is a safe and healthy practice and can be done by nearly anybody at any time. If you are on prescription medication, I would consult you GP first. I don’t recommend that pregnant women or children do the juice detox. Increasingly in modern life, more and more people are choosing to detox.

The liver is the main organ responsible for detoxification in the body due to its many metabolic functions, although the kidneys play an important role as well. The colon is responsible for the elimination of toxins, and an effective cleansing treatment will need to tackle both of these body systems. The ideal detox treatment encourages the body to deal with toxins in a natural way, without putting the body under any strain.

Incorporating two or more methods into your detox program will give you the best results. Fasting, skin brushing, exercises, colonic irrigation and aromatherapy detoxifying and stimulating essential oils.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and it plays a major role in eliminating toxins. The simple technique of skin brushing is a highly effective strategy in your battle against toxins. It stimulates the circulation and superficial glands, thereby improving lymph drainage, helping to flush out toxins

Body Brushing and Detox Baths
Using a natural thistle brush, start at your toes and gently brush upwards towards your heart using quick sweeping motions. A long handled brush enables you to reach further. To further aid the detox, you can use bathing treatments using a different combination of essential oils and Epsom salts.

Exercise and Diet
Just 15 minutes on a small trampoline (re bounder) helps to stimulate the lymph nodes which drain the lymphatic system. Amazingly, during exercise the lymph can drain about 20 ml of waste per minute, whereas at rest this figure falls to only 1-2 ml per minute. Swimming, jogging, circuit training and even just brisk walking really help to increase your metabolic rate and boost your circulatory system.

The day before and the day after the detox fast, try to eat raw vegetables, Salads, fruits, juices and smoothies.

Juice fasting is like scrubbing your digestive system clean and can be a great way to jumpstart a habit of a healthier diet and healthier living. But, while juice fasting is growing in popularity, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do. It’s important to know what to expect from a juice fast before you get started.

Starting a Juice Fast

If you’re new to juice fasting, consider doing a 3, 5 or 7 day fast. For that period, you’ll be consuming nothing but juices made from fruits and vegetables – ideally organic – and water.

The 5 Stages of a Juice Fast

Most life changing experiences come to us in stages – and juice fasting is no different. During this experience, you’ll likely go through five major phases.

Optimism: Hopefully, if you’ve decided to take the leap and do a juice fast, you’re doing it because you’re excited about the results you’ll achieve. You start out eager to enjoy your first juice and encouraged about what the future holds. Maybe you’re excited about the challenge, maybe you’re excited about the health improvements to come. Whatever your reason, your first stage of juice fast is most likely one filled with optimism.

Hunger: Then, by the end of day one or day two the hunger sets in. You will probably start noticing food and food advertisements everywhere and can’t help but think how good it would be to bite into just about anything. The fact is, doing a juice fast is breaking a long-held habit. The key during the hunger phase (which, by the way, will probably surface more than a few times) is to find a way to take your mind off your hunger. Read a book, practice yoga, go for a walk. Take this opportunity to also break the habit of sitting in front of the television and eating absent-mindedly.

Strange Sensations: On day two, you may start to notice some weight loss (hooray!), but you may also notice other changes in your body, i.e. headaches, cramps, fatigue and increased trips to the bathroom. This is all completely normal. Juice fasting detoxes your body and all of these slightly unpleasant experiences are your body’s reaction to getting rid of the junk it’s been holding on to for a long time. Don’t worry. This phase is only temporary.

The “What am I doing?” Phase: At some point a few days in, you may start to wonder what you were thinking when you decided to embark on a juice fast. This is usually also around day 2 or 3. Your body is feeling ‘off’, you’re hungry, and you’re wondering what people were talking about when they said a juice fast will make you feel great. Trust me, I can tell you first hand, the benefits are coming! This is where that support system will come in handy. Remember, you can do this and you will feel great in the end. Don’t give up.

Success:  Around day 3, you will probably notice a shift. You will see a lower number on the scale, you may notice more energy throughout the day. Like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, this is the point at which you know you have this thing nailed and can make it until the end – and that the benefits are coming.

Return to Solid Food

You’ve just been on a life-changing journey, and the last thing you want to do is fall back into your old ways. Start incorporating solid food slowly and allow yourself to remember what you’ve just done – and why you did it.

Re-dedicate yourself each day to eating healthy and living better so that the benefits of the juice fast stay with you. I recommend you even keep a diary of your experience and refer back to it often as a way to remind yourself of the five stages of the juice fast that you went through and how you came out better on the other end.

Advice on Cleansing

Each person experiences a juice detox and juice fast side effects differently depending on their body, their past, current illnesses and eating habits. Successive cleanses are usually different than the first cleanse.

What will happen to me?

Minor ailments such as colds, fevers, skin spots, headaches, pimples/boils, fatigue, dizziness, sinus pressure, runny nose, loose or hard stools, low energy and body odor are extremely common.

The cleanse is like a time machine…it takes you back through old problems and you re-experience old conditions as you stir up old toxins in your body. Some people say that their juice fast side effect consist of having flashbacks of feelings or tastes. People that use to smoke cigarettes years ago say they can taste it in their mouth. People that had done recreational drugs feel a little high as the drugs get released from the fat cells in the body. Joints hurt and sinus problems re arise.

This is called a healing crisis. It’s a good thing. These detox symptoms are a sign that the body is cleansing. A little discomfort now will do a world of difference later.

Should I be concerned?

This is not unusual or strange. Your body is going through a withdrawal of sugar, caffeine, processed foods, pollution, etc, at the same time stirring up toxins in the body. Keep in mind these are not because of the juice detox diet, it’s based off of what you’ve done to your body in the past.

This happens because one or more of your organs is forced to cleanse at an accelerated pace in order to deal with a large amount of wastes from tissues in the body. It causes discomfort. Some people experience discomfort for just a few minutes, some have symptoms that last hours. The longer and harder you have discomfort, the more you needed the juice detox.

Just keep in mind that you aren’t dying, you’re getting better! You can’t know what to expect, as small problems from the past could resurface as a bigger problem, possibly catching an early problem developing into a bigger issue someday.

Most people say that they have one day during the juice diet is particularly hard to get through but it’s common to feel good after 4-5 days. The first few days of any detox diet will be the days that your body will cleanse the most rapidly.

Common Changes

Other common changes that people experience as juice fast side effects are:

Menstrual cycle changes
Bowel movements can smell foul
Sinuses draining and mucus loosening in thought
Extreme nausea enough to make you vomit. Most of the time, mucus is what is vomited and nausea dissipates. Drink ginger tea to help.
Bad breath
Worsening body odor
Skin worsens (blotchy spots, acne, etc)

You’ll have to read your body and access the situation as it comes. Most people power through it, but you can do a few things to get through it like get a massage, colonic, enema, body wrap, rest by reading or watching tv, acupuncture, sleeping or a bath.

If it’s too much for you to handle, I recommend eating raw foods (like vegetable sticks or a raw salad), then starting up on the juice fast again. You could also start again at a later date when you feel stronger or more hopeful.

All of this said, many people experience good juice detoxes where only one or two of these symptoms appear and they feel happier, mind clearer, and get more energy every day. It’s different for everyone. In the end, focus on the other side and a healthier you!
